WINES OF EMILIA-ROMAGNA
The Zavalloni family has been cultivating the 11 hectares of its wine-growing estate on the hills of Madonna dell’Olivo near Cesena in Emilia-Romgna since the middle of the 19th century. Today’s members of the Zavalloni family represent the sixth generation of winemakers.
The passion, attention and love Amedeo and his son Fabio dedicate to their vineyards have culminated in the production of quality wines that embody the very soul of the „land of Romagna“. Today, the winery relies both on ancient traditions of winemaking and on the use of modern wine making technologies.
Our family estate is located near the Adriatic Sea. Not only do we keep the grapes dry and fresh. Due to the flavors of aromatic herbs such as thyme and marjoram, we also give our wines particular scent profiles. The microclimate on the hills of Cesena, the area’s excellent medium-textured soils (with a tendency to clay soil) as well as the manual labor and care we constantly dedicate to our vineyards give our wines a strong, vigorous structure with profound mineral aromas and have made them outstandingly typical and well recognizable.
The famous Sangiovese grape is the most loved of all Romagna grapes. The Sangiovese is a grape variety that has found her true fertile soil in the „land of Romagna“. Here, she is at home. Here, she grows best. We produce Sangiovese Romagna DOC (controlled designation of origin) in accordance with long-standing traditions, also in the finer versions Superiore and Riserva. The Sangiovese grape has strong flavors of blackberry, cherry and brushwood and its tannins, depending on the production method, can be „tamed“ either more or less. The Sangiovese Superiore and the Riserva distinguish themselves by their fine wooden scents, from the aroma of tobacco to more toast-like nuances.
The Albana grape, the queen grape of Romagna, is our pride and joy. It is the only DOCG wine (controlled and guaranteed designation of origin) of this region and comes both in a dry and sweet version. Its bouquet is unique and distinctive. Albana DOCG is a white wine with a very distinct body with notes of yellow fruits, citrus fruits and figs. The sweet version of this wine also comprises the aromas of honey and genista. Like all good „passito wines“ or dried-grape wines, the best way to enjoy this kind of wine is either by itself or with dry pastry.
Sparkling wines are indispensable at the beginning of a dinner or at the end of a party. The sparkling wines we produce are made with Trebbiano and Sangiovese grapes. Our favorite sparkling wine is the Metodo Classico („Classic Method“). We wanted to pay homage to the great tradition of sparkling wines by producing a Metodo Classico Rosé with very fruity aromas that harmonize with the wine’s classic note of bread crust.
